Supporting the PMA Charity Ball 2022 opens doors for Pacific students in health & medicine
Updates / Events, 12 Aug 22
The Pasifika Medical Association’s (PMA) annual Charity Ball will take place next month at the Te Papa Museum in Wellington, an evening that will help fundraise towards PMA’s Education Fund.

The PMA Education Fund services several scholarships that help to support Pacific students and health professionals in their field of study or work.

Medical Registrar at Middlemore Hospital, Dr Mosana Evagelia, was a recipient of the Papali’iDr Semisi Mai’a’i University of Otago Scholarship in 2019.

She says the scholarship provided the necessary support in her transition to Auckland, where she envisioned herself working as a medical Doctor.

“I was very grateful and I was so blessed. When I had received the scholarship I was a trainee intern at Christchurch Hospital.

I knew that I wanted to move up to Auckland because Middlemore serves the largest Pacific community in New Zealand. The scholarship helped me with transitioning; just knowing I didn’t have that financial burden on me moving from Christchurch to Auckland.”

Dr Evagelia is enjoying the opportunity to serve Pacific communities in her current role at Middlemore Hospital.

“I’ve been working at Middlemore hospital for three years now. I’m currently covering the kidneys; I see a lot of our Pacific communities in this role which is rewarding for me and the patient as well.”

Dr Evagelia is grateful for the scholarship in supporting her as she pursued her medical career and looks forward to the next generation of Pacific medical professionals coming through.

The PMA Charity Ball is on Tuesday 06 September 2022 at Te Papa Museum in Wellington.
