More than 446 families and 2200 Pacific individuals received packages of support from South Island Pacific health providers, Etu Pasifika and Fale Pasifika o Aoraki to help them in the aftermath of the recent North Canterbury floods.
The Pasifika Futures partners received emergency funding to support families with the provision of food, household essentials and where necessary, temporary accommodation for those who found themselves homeless during the crisis.
Tongan mother Lucyane Fangaiuiha, who lives in Ashburton, was one of the people who sought assistance for her family during the flooding crisis, when she was forced to take on reduced working hours at her job with the local meat processing plant.
“I was really worried because I was still trying to find a way to support my family and provide them with some security. We reached out and we are grateful that Fale Pasifika was there to help us.
I know of seven other different Pacific families in the area who received support and they were appreciative of the help as well.”
Etu Pasifika based in Christchurch and Fale Pasifika o Aoraki based in Timaru supported Pacific families living in Christchurch, Geraldine, Ashburton and its surrounding areas who experienced hardships after heavy downpour caused severe flooding.
Etu Pasifika general manager, Amanaki Misa, says ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Pacific families during a time of crisis is their top priority.
“Our team will always be ready to mobilise support during a crisis. It is who we are and this is what our community expects, which is a blessing and a privilege”.
