This year’s Conference theme is: Reconnect, Reflect, Reframe and Re-energise. A theme that Board Chair for the PMA Membership, Dr Jitoko Cama (FRACS) believes will resonate with many in the health sector following the impact of the global pandemic.
“Reconnecting is about mental health innovation and integration. Given the crisis of Covid-19, the second theme is around Reflecting on the pandemic in terms of humanitarian assistance and recovery. Reframing is looking at what’s new in climate change especially with the Pacific region and Re-energising is around moving Pacific horizons towards equity.
These themes will drive conversations that will help us connect with each other and will enable us to share and exchange knowledge”, says Dr Cama.
One of the higlhights for the PMA conference this year is to have effective engagement with tertiary students and trainee doctors that will hopefully encourage them to be part of the vast PMA network.
“For the first time, we are holding a mentoring workshop on the first day for students and trainee doctors, which will be an opportunity for our future health professionals to connect within a supportive environment. We will also have a Mental Health Leadership forum on the first day.
It is important that we continue to grow and nurture our young health professionals because they are the future of our workforce. It’s vital we facilitate spaces where they can learn and develop key skills that will help them in their aspirations to work in the medical field.”
With the Covid-19 pandemic having disrupted the PMA Conference over the past two years, Dr Cama is excited for the conversations and dialogue that will ensue from the upcoming meeting.
“I think it’s about time that we meet and share knowledge. It’s an opportunity to learn and listen to presenters who are experts in their various fields.
The conference is also a time to reflect on the work of PMA in New Zealand and the Pacific region during the Covid-19 pandemic; it will give us some ideas around where to from here because Covid-19 will be around for quite a long while.”
