Prioritising best practice in a Pacific context
Updates / News, 30 Jul 26
With roots spanning across New Zealand — from Invercargill and Taranaki to Auckland and the Bay of Plenty — Marcelle Mafi has spent the past five years calling Tonga home alongside her Tongan husband and their five children. Her journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to health, education, and community service.

After moving to Tonga, she spent two years volunteering as a Nurse Educator at Vaiola Hospital in Tongatapu, before taking on the role of Health Programme Coordinator at the New Zealand High Commission, where she supports and oversees health initiatives funded by New Zealand in Tonga. Alongside her professional work, she continues to give back through her role as a part-time clinical supervisor at the Tonga National University Nursing School, helping to strengthen the next generation of Pacific health professionals.

She will be presenting her study at the upcoming PMA Conference.

What are you passionate about and why?

I am passionate about people, reaching their potential and working together to help each other in whatever capacity we can.

You are scheduled to present on "Impact of standardisation on best practice in a Pacific context" - what is this about and why is it important for our Pacific communities?

We all want the best healthcare for the Pacific, we want Pacific people to not only live longer but live well and this study is about making sure we aren’t doing things in the wrong order. We can’t expect good policy or protocol to help when we can’t yet reliably and consistently access what we need to fulfil these policies and protocols.

Words of advice/inspiration for people who are looking to pursue a similar career to you?

Go for it -the more people working for the betterment of healthcare in the Islands, the better.
