PMA secures the future of the New Zealand Medical Journal
Updates / News, 8 Jul 22
The Pasifika Medical Association Group (PMAG) have recently acquired the New Zealand Medical Journal (NZMJ) and will look to build on the pioneering legacy that has been established over the publication’s 136 years of existence.

The NZMJ’s first edition was published in 1887 and has become a key asset in providing research and written pieces from the health and medical industry. The journal has cemented itself as the leading scientific journal for the field of medicine in New Zealand.

PMA Board Chair, Dr Kiki Maoate (ONZM, FRACS), says PMA’s investment into the NZMJ was intentional and serves a wider purpose.

“The NZMJ comes with a rich history and is uniquely New Zealand centric; PMA is pleased to have taken action in securing the future of the NZMJ and we look forward to keeping the essence of the journal alive.

To ensure there is minimal disruption with the transition of NZMJ to PMA, there are no changes in the current mechanisms for publication and the editorial team is the same, with Professor Frank Frizelle remaining as Editor in Chief”.

Dr Maoate also sees an opportunity for the involvement of more Pacific researchers and health professionals with the journal.

“What’s also special about the NZMJ is that it is a vehicle for peer reviewed science and political commentary. It is a platform that drives and cultivates a space that helps bring those within this profession together to exchange ideas and contribute to a wider vision.

We already house the Pacific Health Dialogue journal (PHD) so there is an opportunity for cross over and for those aspiring Pacific researchers and health professionals to be involved with the NZMJ”.
