Updates / Community, 23 Nov 23
In her fifth year of medicine at the University of Auckland, Tarah Fepulea’i is the recipient of PMA’s Dr Leopino Foliaki University of Auckland Scholarship 2023.

Ms Fepulea’i hails from the villages of Matautu-uta, Moata’a, Alamagoto and Falealili in Upolu, and Manase on the big island of Savaii, Samoa. She shares her journey with pursuing medicine and the ongoing support she receives from her family.

"The decision to pursue a career in medicine wasn't made overnight."

"This dream took root at a young age, mainly inspired by my maternal grandmother, who dedicated so much of her life as a District and Public Health Nurse in Samoa. She embodied the meaning of service, taking on numerous roles within the health system so that Samoa could benefit in the long run, as they continue to do so today."

Throughout her journey, Ms Fepulea’i's parents have been her greatest motivation.

"My dad's work ethic is unmatched, and he is the hardest-working person I know. My mum embodies compassion, and she has always been a constant in my life. They both exemplify qualities I aspire to emulate in my future career as a Doctor."

She also acknowledged her family and her village, saying, "I acknowledge the unwavering support from my family, who form a big part of my Village. Particularly my grandparents who fervently pray for me and have instilled in me the values of humility and tautua (service)."

"I am humbled and truly honoured to be a recipient of the Dr Leopino Foliaki University of Auckland Scholarship," she said, expressing her gratitude.

"I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Pasifika Medical Association and the Board, for considering me worthy of this scholarship, as I know that many others are so deserving of it."

Ms Fepulea’i shared her aspirations for Pacific Health.

"My aspiration for Pacific Health is to see an equitable exposure to the social determinants of health for our people, a greater representation of Pasifika within the healthcare workforce, and a culturally safe health system. I envision a future where our Pasifika communities continue to thrive, lead healthy lives, and are well-informed when making decisions about their health."

As she continues her medical journey, Ms Fepulea’i hopes to make a significant impact and contribute to the betterment of healthcare for Pasifika communities in New Zealand and beyond.
