Updates / Community, 6 Dec 23
George Powell is in his fifth year of medical school at the University of Auckland and hails from Pangaimotu in Vava’u, Tonga. Mr Powell has been honoured with the prestigious Dr Leopino Foliaki University of Auckland Scholarship for 2023.

Mr Powell's journey towards a career in medicine reflects a deep-seated desire that was nurtured from an early age.

"Ever since I was a young child, I remember wanting to be a doctor. I never had any family who were medical, but I always felt that the medical profession had the most similarities to the values with which I was raised."

The values instilled in Mr Powell during his formative years were deeply rooted in the principles of education and hard work. The sacrifices made by his parents, who were immigrants in New Zealand, resonate in his journey.

"Neither of my parents came from wealthy families. Yet they understood the importance of education and hard work.

"My parents both made huge sacrifices to provide opportunities for my brothers and me to chase our dreams. Both are immigrants and chose to sacrifice a life of comfort so we could go to a top school."

Family and faith hold paramount significance in Mr Powell's life, shaping his motivation and moral compass.

"Family in general will always be my number one influence and motivation. My faith has also played a huge part in my life up until this point and it continues to guide me at many different times."

Mr Powell's aspirations extend beyond his personal journey; he envisions a future where the Pasifika community is well-represented in the medical field.

"I hope that becoming a doctor will inspire other young Pasifika youth to chase their dreams and to serve our communities, by pursuing medicine."

Advocacy remains a vital aspect of Mr Powell's mission, particularly concerning the health and well-being of his community.

"I know that advocacy will always remain a huge part of my clinical practice, particularly when it comes to the health of our people. There have been many trail-blazers that have gone before, and I hope that I can be a part of that calling."
