Phyllein Pauli Taetafe was the recipient of the Christina Atoa Tapu Nursing Scholarship in 2019, which she says helped in her final year of studies.

“The scholarship not only alleviated the financial pressure as I was in my final year, but it helped me with that final push to complete my studies.

Winning the scholarship was a reminder of why I studied in the first place, with the scholarship being one that empowered Pacific nurses and our aspirations.”

She hopes that anyone who may be thinking of applying for a PMA scholarship gives it a chance and acts on their thoughts to apply. 

“I say go for it. People typically don’t apply for scholarships because they’re afraid they won’t get it, but you just never know.

It’s an opportunity that’s out there, but we need to take that first step and grasp these opportunities.”

Ms Taetafe is now working with South Seas Healthcare, a partner of Pasifika Futures, and is relishing the opportunity to serve the Pacific community. 

As a young nurse she offers some words of encouragement for those still studying as she knows how it feels to be working towards completing a qualification and navigating through unchartered waters as a young Pacific person. 

“Never give up on the person you’re meant to become, whether it be career wise or taking up opportunities to grow as a person.

Each and every day is an opportunity to learn and become a better version of yourself.”
