PACMAT answer Niue’s call for Covid-19 support
Updates / Community, 27 Feb 22
Earlier this week in response to a request from the Niue government, the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) deployed their Medical Assistance Team (PACMAT) to support Niue’s national Covid-19 response.

The PACMAT team deployed to Niue is made up of medical specialists whose expertise includes public health, general practice, vaccination, community welfare and emergency disaster management. The Niue PACMAT team will be led by Mr Renee Mose whose technical expertise across public health and covid-19 vaccinations will be critical in the success of the team.

In consultation with the department of Health in Niue, the objectives of the PACMAT team include; providing support and training for health workers to improve Covid-19 awareness and preparedness, provide clinical primary care to patients and support local nurses and doctors in administering the Covid-19 vaccination to the community.

PMA Member and proud Niuean Dr Collin Tukuitonga who has been instrumental in the establishment and deployment of the team to Niue is grateful for PMA’s support in ensuring that families in the Pacific region are also receiving protection from Covid-19.

“I want to acknowledge and thank PMA and PACMAT for their immediate response to the Niue governments request for support in their fight against Covid-19. This support is essentially a pre-emptive strike, that allows Niue to be in a stronger position in the event of an outbreak in the community.

PACMAT is assisting with the vaccine roll out and will provide support to tighten border measures that includes fast and effective screening and testing so that everyone on the island stays safe and are protected”, says Dr Tukuitonga.

The PACMAT team arrived safely in Niue and all tested negative on day one of their ten-day MIQ isolation period.  The PACMAT deployment will be for three weeks in total and will be a busy time for the team who are looking forward to helping their Niuean community.
