Three esteemed regional dentists from the Oral Health Pacific Islands Alliance, have achieved a remarkable milestone by being inducted as Fellows of the International College of Dentists (ICD). Through the support of the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA), the three oral health specialists were able to attend and celebrate their ceremony, held at the Te Pae Convention Centre in Christchurch.

PMA President, Dr Kiki Maoate, proudly congratulates Dr Kirianu Nio, Dr Nelson Tangwha, and Dr Jenny Tangis on their accomplishment and expressed his joy in their recognition.

"We are extremely delighted to have played a part in supporting our dental colleagues from the Cook Islands and Vanuatu to attend this significant event, where they were rightfully acknowledged for their unwavering commitment to their profession and their communities.

"Seeing Dr Kirianu Nio, Dr Jenny Tangis, and Dr Nelson Tangwha recognized as Fellows of the International College of Dentists fills us with immense pride," said Dr Maoate.

Dr Tangis shared her deep gratitude for PMA's unwavering support throughout their journey.

"We are incredibly thankful to Dr Kiki Maoate and PMA for their support, especially in connecting us with valuable support groups during the induction program. Dr Kiki's presence at our induction was also incredibly meaningful.

"The PMA not only supported us emotionally but also funded our travel and accommodation."

For Dr Tangis and Dr Tangwha, this recognition is historic, as they become the first dentists from Vanuatu to be inducted into the ICD, an achievement that is of profound impact for the Pacific island.

"As newly appointed Fellows, we have now opened doors for the advancement of dentistry in Vanuatu. I am committed to serving the best interests of the College, honouring, and upholding the principles of the badge that has been bestowed upon me," shared Dr Tangwha.

Dr Nio, hailing from Tai-Ote-Papa on the island of Pukapuka in the northern Cook Islands, is also excited about the future opportunities this fellowship brings.

"Becoming a Fellow is a humbling honour. This new appointment will always remind me of the ICD's motto, 'recognising service as well as the opportunity to serve.' I, along with my fellow recipients, plan to return home to improve the dental health outcomes for our communities."

The Pasifika Medical Association once again extends our heartfelt congratulations and eagerly anticipates the positive impact these three esteemed Fellows will continue to make in the Pacific.
