Siulolo Palu, a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing from Ara Institute of Canterbury – Te Pūkenga, hails from the Pacific island of Tonga. However, she believes that her true home lies within the embrace of her people, regardless of geographical location.

Ms Palu was the recipient of Pasifika Medical Association’s (PMA) Violani 'Ilolahia Nursing Scholarship in 2022. She is driven by a calling to bring compassionate and culturally sensitive care to the Pacific community and aims to improve health outcomes for Pacific peoples.

Currently, Ms Palu is awaiting her registration exam in July after completing her degree. She is also working as a volunteer mentor for Pacific students and a part-time caregiver.

“My current roles have inspired me to pursue a career as a theatre nurse, specifically at Christchurch Hospital. I aspire to bridge cultural gaps in healthcare, providing culturally sensitive care while striving for positive health outcomes.”

Ms Palu was drawn to the field of nursing due to her belief that it is more than just a job.

"Nursing is not only a profession but is also a calling that holds the potential for profound impact, not only on individual patients but also on the wider community. As a nurse, I recognise the transformative power we possess to heal not only the physical ailments but also the mind, soul, and heart of those we care for."

"It is my personal mission to ensure that individuals from diverse backgrounds, including the Pacific community, receive culturally sensitive and holistic healthcare. By embracing the unique values, traditions, and health challenges of the Pacific community, I aim to make a lasting difference in the lives of those I serve."

Ms Palu's biggest influence in her journey as a student nurse has been her grandparents and community.

“Their unwavering support, encouragement, and belief in my abilities have propelled me forward. Their prayers and blessings have been a source of strength, guiding me through challenges and helping me achieve success thus far in my nursing journey."

Reflecting on the PMA Scholarship, Ms Palu expressed her gratitude for the support and opportunities it provided during her studies.

“This scholarship has not only alleviated financial burdens but has also opened doors to academic resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities that have enhanced my learning experience. I have been able to access educational materials, attend conferences, and participate in workshops that have broadened my knowledge and skills.”

Ms. Palu provides words of encouragement to students pursuing a career in health, drawing inspiration from a Tongan proverb.

"'Sii pe kae ha'—though we may be small, we possess greatness within us."
