Minister of Whānau Ora commends Pasifika Futures for supporting Pacific families through tough times
Updates / News, 26 Jul 24
Day two of the Pasifika Futures (PFL) Whānau Ora Conference has kicked off, with Minister of Whānau Ora, Hon. Tama Potaka, delivering the first keynote speech of the day. He began his address by emphasising the importance of spiritual health and wellbeing, particularly acknowledging the cultural practice of starting with karakia (prayer) and PFL Board Director, Sir Michael Jones’ decision not to play rugby on Sundays.

Reflecting on 10 years of Whānau Ora at PFL, he thanked them for their service during Covid-19, the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle.

“I’m immensely proud of Pasifika Futures, partners and whānau. I commend you for your agility and response to support and guide families who are doing it tough.

“You are actively helping people in their time of need.”

Hon. Potaka urged the development of new tools to foster Pacific innovation, noting the effective use of the Whānau Ora model to assist families, especially given the current social, financial and mental pressures.

Hon. Potaka, who also holds ministerial portfolios for Māori Development, Conservation, Māori Crown Relations: Te Arawhiti, and Housing (Social Housing), acknowledged PFL for their work to support families with mental health through the Ngalu Fānifo programme.

He commended partners for the wrap-around support provided to families, and encouraged them to continue looking after our young people and our matua (elderly).

In closing, he expressed his gratitude and thanked delegates for their service to community.

“You should be proud of what you have achieved alongside whānau and aiga.”
