International Nurses Day 2023: Melania Watta
Updates / Community, 12 May 23
Melania Watta is a Nurse at Etu Pasifika Auckland and finds that it is a career she enjoys due to her love for helping people. Melania started working with Etu Pasifika Auckland this year and is grateful for the opportunity to serve Pasifika communities and looks forward to learning and growing in her role as a nurse.

What islands & villages do you come from?

I come from the beautiful islands of Fiji, specifically from the Lau islands. My villages are Yadrana (Dad) and Nasaqalau (Mom). I am one of five children and I’ve been living in New Zealand for over 10 years now. Currently working in Etu Pasifika Auckland Clinic.

What drove you to pursue a career in nursing?

As corny as it sounds I just like to help people, simple as that. I decided to pursue a career in nursing because I loved serving the community, helping our most vulnerable. Now that I am at Etu Pasifika Auckland, having the opportunity to serve our Pasifika people and being their first point of contact, is a great responsibility and privilege.

The best thing about being a nurse is..
There’s so many great things about being a nurse, to start with the many different people you get to work with. I have and currently work with so many amazing and talented people.
Serving our people in our community, after helping them through their concerns or issues and having made just a little difference in their life leaves you with such a rewarding feeling at the end of the day.

When you’re not at work, what do you do to practise self care?
When I’m not at work, I like to catch up on my rest. Whether that’s catching up sleep or just some quite time to myself. Once I’m all caught up on rest, I spend some much needed quality time with my family and especially my son who is the centre of my world. They fill up my cup so that I can go out and face the world.

What’s your piece of advice for anyone who is wanting to become a nurse?
Nursing is an amazing career but it is not for the faint hearted. If you have your passion and your why and hold on to that you will do amazing things, big or small. Be prepared to work hard but also remember the difference you’re making in the community.
