The theme for the inaugural Pacific health Research Symposium is “Collaboration for Better Pacific Health” which is being hosted by the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) and the University of Auckland, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
Senior PMA member Dr Colin Tukuitonga (DSM, MPH, FAFPHM, FRNZCGP) believes this is an opportunity for researchers across diverse disciplines to present their work, discuss projects, and foster new collaborations.
“There’s a lot of valuable research being done by students and staff at the Auckland University and at other places that not many people know about,” says Dr Tukuitonga.
“We hope to encourage young students to share their work and get feedback from specialists, doctors and nurses to try and foster a culture of information and get into the habit of people sharing their research with each other.”
Also scheduled to present at the symposium are experienced researchers, like the team from the “Growing up in New Zealand” study. It is the country’s largest contemporary longitudinal study of child development. The research tracks the lives of more than 6,000 Kiwi children to discover what life is like growing up in 21st Century New Zealand.
“The children in this study have now turned eight and there’s a lot of information about Pacific Island children in this research that many people don’t know about,” he says.
Dr Tukuitonga is hoping the inaugural symposium will become an annual fixture. He says it is a great opportunity for experienced medical professionals and students to come together to make new connections.
“This is an event that brings people together, to learn from each other, to develop new networks and to meet people who share their research interests.”
