First patients to undergo transformative surgeries under the Uto Bulabula initiative
Updates / News, 26 Jul 24
Living Our Best Lives | Our PMA team is continuing to support the families involved in the Uto Bulabula initiative as the first patients get ready to undergo transformative surgeries.

Theatre preparation day

Coordinated by the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA), a team of over 30 health professionals from Hearts4Kids arrived into Suva, currently based at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital, preparing for the much-anticipated surgeries part of the Uto Bulabula – Healthy Hearts initiative.

Among the brave young patients, three have been admitted for their life-changing operations, having successfully cleared their pre-operative assessments. These initial surgeries mark the beginning of a critical mission to provide these children with a brighter, healthier future.

Paediatric Nurse from Vanuatu, Susie Takasum, is helping with the support of the Ni-Vanuatu patients.

"I'm very happy to be here part of the team and to support the mothers. They feel at home seeing me because I'm from Vanuatu and so I help them as best as I can.

"I think the Uto Bulabula initiative is very important to give them a chance for good health and a promising future back home."

Meeting with Dr Josese Turagave Chief Paediatric Surgeon, Colonial War Memorial Hospital

The PMA team also had the privilege of meeting with Dr Josese Turagava, the esteemed Chief Paediatric Surgeon at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Dr Turagava expressed his admiration for the collective efforts of the Uto Bulabula – Healthy Hearts Initiative.

"It's hard to stand alone in isolation pushing for issues. Our voices are a lot more louder when we all stand collectively. It's a lot easier when all of us come together and unite.

"We have children who are in need of urgent intervention and it's vital that we focus on building our capacity now and for the future."

This collaboration embodies the spirit of compassion and collective action, providing these children with the vital care they need and inspiring hope for a healthier tomorrow.

The Uto Bulabula - Healthy Hearts initiative is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and coordinated by the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) Group, through the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme.
