The recent Canterbury floods coincided with the opening of Etu Pasifika’s new health clinic and Covid-19 vaccination centre, so although it was a time of celebration, once the heavy rainfall hit crisis point, the team at Etu Pasifika responded swiftly and prioritised the immediate support and relief of Pacific families affected by the floods.
Etu Pasifika – a Pasifika Futures partner – reached out to church leaders and the community in the North Canterbury area to offer support in the form of Family Support Packages and connections to additional social support services.
General manager, Mr Amanaki Misa, says his staff and organisation are prepared and committed to respond to any crisis, regardless of other activities happening within the organisation.
“These are our very own Pacific families crying out for help. It’s not an option to delay this support and assistance. I feel really grateful that I have a team that are flexible and that our personal values are aligned with the communities.”
As of last Monday, Etu Pasifika have provided support and food packages to 100 Pacific families affected by the floods, from within Christchurch to the outskirts of Ashburton. Etu Pasfiika has also provided temporary accommodation to a Pacific family with a young baby who were displaced because of the flooding.
“If there is a need and if our families are struggling, then we will try and provide a solution. That’s our philosophy. We exist to serve.”
He says a crisis like the recent flooding gives his staff and navigators an opportunity to reach out to families, to check in with their overall welfare.
“We run a relationship-based service. Families are worried and stressed about their employment and future. We feel privileged that we can play a role in their recovery.”
Etu Pasifika Social Service Manager, Mr Antonio Filimoehala has visited and spoken to families in need. He is inspired by the courage and resilience shown by Pacific families during the crisis.
“We know that our people are resourceful but we are also proud and strong. To see them have the courage to ask for help, to better themselves and to keep themselves going, is amazing.”
