Dr Vivili will become the 23rd Director-General to serve SPC and its 27 member countries and territories, marking a historic milestone as the first Tongan appointed to lead the organisation.
"It is an honour and a privilege to be given the trust of the members to serve the Pacific Community as Director-General,” said Dr Vivili.
“I look forward to working with the members, partners, and the very talented staff to progress SPC’s vision. I look forward to times of reflection, consultation and collective decision making and actions to take our work to the next level, building on the solid results left behind by Dr Minchin."
Dr Vivili’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Pacific leadership in regional and global health. Alongside Dr Saia Piukala, another long-standing PMA Life Member and current WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, their collective leadership is a deeply significant moment for the region.
PMA Chief Executive Officer, Debbie Sorensen ONZM, says Dr Vivili’s appointment is a proud moment for the Pacific health community.
"We are incredibly proud of Dr Vivili, who has been a valued member of the PMA family for many years. His leadership, humility, and dedication to advancing the wellbeing of Pacific peoples have always been evident in his work.
"To have both Dr Vivili and Dr Piukala, two outstanding Pacific leaders and long-time PMA Members, serving in such influential regional roles is a true testament to the strength, capability, and unity of our Pacific health leadership."
The PMA family extends its warmest congratulations to Dr Vivili and looks forward to continuing to support and celebrate the leadership of Pacific professionals driving change and progress across our region.
