NZMTS: PISA reunites for ECO Care Equity at Asia-Pacific Conference
Updates , 11 Nov 25
After a seven-year hiatus, the Pacific Islands Surgeons Association (PISA) reunited in Suva recently for the ECO Care Equity in the Asia-Pacific Conference, marking a significant moment for the region’s surgical community and its shared commitment to strengthening surgical care across the Pacific.

Focused on emergency, critical, and operative (ECO) care, the conference brought together PISA, the Global Alliance for Surgical Obstetrics, Trauma and Anaesthesia Care (G4 Alliance), the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and other key organisations to explore strategies for improving ECO care systems across the Asia-Pacific region amid the growing challenges of climate change.

The Pasifika Medical Association Group (PMA), through the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme (NZMTS), proudly supported the participation of 25 Fijian doctors, reaffirming its commitment to empowering Pacific health professionals and advancing access to essential, life-saving surgical services. Since its establishment, PMA has worked alongside PISA to develop a connected Pacific surgical network that embodies regional collaboration, leadership, and innovation in healthcare delivery.

Delivering the keynote address on Day One, Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, World Health Organization Western Pacific Region Director and PMA Life Member, reflected on the enduring strength and unity that define Pacific healthcare workers.

“Pacific Islanders have never waited for perfect conditions; we’ve met imperfect ones with courage, creativity, and care. It is that shared resilience and unity that continues to shape our region’s progress in health.”

Dr Piukala’s message aligned with a central theme of PMA’s work, in that prosperity is driven by collaboration, compassion and the commitment to working together to strengthen Pacific health systems.

The NZMTS is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
